Does it really make any difference?
I did a test on Miss Meep's blog earlier to see how old I really am. It turns out I really am how old I am, which is disappointing as I'd imagined I was actually younger. It's all to do with your health and eating hobbits, how much you exercise, whether you smoke and drink and so on. And it got me thinking: you know all this 'eat 5 portions of fruit and veg every day' and 'floss' and 'anti-oxidants' stuff is just a modern fad, a Daily Mail 'we've just found out that this is the most important thing in the world' type deal that is in a constant state of flux - tomorrow B&H and Tennants Super will be lauded as the new wonderdrugs that can cure cot deaths and dampness. In the olden days, people just ate and drank what they wanted - massive chunks of white bread with beef dripping, pasties with savoury at one end and sweet at the other, gallons of ale, roast boar.... And they all managed just fine, surviving till their 90s no problem. But if you know that a bucket of chicken from KFC contains lots of fat and salt and God knows what else to make it taste so delightful, and that a piece of steamed fish and some crudites contain lots of vitamins and minerals, you can't ignore it, you have to eat the healthy option otherwise you'll feel guilty about all the damage you're doing to yourself. But what if we didn't know? What if, like in them olden times, we just ate what we could get and got on with it lad. Perhaps that's where the phrase 'what you don't know can't hurt you' comes from. Well, I think it's good to be informed about food and healthy lifestyles, even if it does mean it's all we ever seem to think about these days. 'The not knowing is easy, and the suspecting, that's okay...' but it's definitely hard knowing for sure.
By the way, I meant to say 'hobbit'.
