Fresh baked...
There's an advert on TV at the moment for 'Burger King's new fresh baked baguettes'. Now, you may have realised by now that I'm a bit of a twat when it comes to words: I think I have a reverse version of Tourettes. Anyway.... I noticed last night that Burger King use the word 'fresh' to describe their baguettes. Good, you would hope they were fresh. But fresh is an adjective, so in this sentence, it's describing the 'baked baguettes'. It's difficult to pick apart the grammar of ads because they don't have to play by the rules, but, by using fresh as an adjective, their ad reads 'fresh... baked baguettes'. Which is fine, but surely they meant that their baguettes are freshly baked: this is a much better selling point than their baguettes just being fresh. So, instead of an adjective, they should have used an adverb: it should read 'freshly baked... baguettes'. But maybe they did mean that their baked baguettes are fresh and aren't implying that they're freshly baked. I think this is one of those mysteries that we'll just have to accept we'll never truly understand. Anyway, I hate Burger King and I'm gluten intolerant, so it doesn't make any difference to me.
