Ah, bank holidays
Ah, bank holiday weekends. We spent Saturday not doing very much, sort of pottering about. On Sunday Corrie and Buffy went to a dog show near Bassenthwaite in the North of the Lakes. They did very well! After that they went over to Ripon, for another dog show on Monday at which they also did very well! So me and Spooky went for walks. Sunday was a bit of a wet day, warm but overcast and drizzly. I decided to stay local, so we dove over to Black Combe. It's a cracking walk, very steep to start but once you're up on the plateau it's nice and easy. The clouds cleared early on and it was lovely and sunny, but as we got to the top the clouds returned. It was actually really eerie. Perhaps it was heaven. Suddenly we were at the summit: that was it, we couldn't see anything, just the cairn. As we descended we left the cloud and it was lovely again. On Monday it was bright and sunny, so we drove into the heart of the lakes and climbed Wetherlam, near the Old Man of Conniston. It's a giant of a hill, with loads of scrambling to get to the top. The path was often impossible to see but Spooky went on ahead and pointed the way. She was amazing: she got it right every time! When we got to the top it started to rain but it was ok, we were heading downhill. We passed lots of old mines ('levels' and 'shafts') and it was very enjoyable. I also watched some DVDs: 'Eternal Sunshine...' and 'The Life and Death of Peter Sellars'. 'Eternal Sunshine' is outstanding: it's so clever and very well made, and tells its beautiful story so powerfully that I was a bit taken aback afterwards. I thought I'd like it but I wasn't prepared for such a little masterpiece. To be honest, I found it a bit too 'mind invigorating' so I quickly put on DVD 2 to calm it down a bit. 'The Life and Death of Peter Sellars' is basically rubbish: I really think it's a film that shouldn't have been made. I love Peter Sellars movies and I doubt knowing what a loser he was is going to enhance them at all. And finally, we have mice. I heard one in the ceiling this morning, and Corrie saw him in the lounge. It's a relief actually: we heard scratching the other day and thought it was rats!
