I did a new install and it works fine. Phew.
I've now transferred everything I had backed up and iBy's basically back to normal. I tell you something though, I'm going to be more wary of Firewire from now on, it's bloody lethal!
That's an exaggeration: it's dodgy in my hands.
So now the dilemma: iBy's nearly 1 year old so do I hope nothing happens to him from now on and pay huge support costs (£35.01 for phone support per incident! up to £1200 for a repair!!!) if it does, or pay £199 for 2 more years warranty?
Mmmm.
