I advertised my car on the noticeboard in the local supermarket, in the local newspaper, on the Auto Trader website and on the Volvo 480 forum. In a week, the only enquiries I had were from companies offering to advertise my car for me.
Then yesterday I got a call - have I still got the 480 for sale? "Yes", I say. "Ok, we'll come up and see it today", he says. "Where are you coming from?", I ask. "Cardiff", he says.
Now I know my car is one of only 480 ever made, and it's in good condition and is relatviely cheap, but Cardiff is 260 miles from Windermere!
"Oh", I say. "Do you work at the hotel or just live there?", he asks. "I live there", I say. "Is it nice?" he asks. "We'll need somewhere to stay when we come and look at the car." "Yes, it's very nice," I say.
So they drove up from Cardiff, booked into the hotel, went for a drive in my car, had a meal and a bottle of wine, and got up early this morning to have a look at the car in the daylight. A quick glance round it and that was that. We went inside, he gave me £1,500 in cash, we signed the documents and shook hands and it was over. Brilliant!
A couple drive more than 500 miles, spend over £100 staying in a hotel and buy a car without even haggling. What are the chances of that, eh?
