You wouldn’t believe what we spent the weekend doing! Well, you would, but it was one of those weekends that warrants that sort of intro.
We hired a van and set off on Saturday morning from Kendal to Cardiff. The 260 miles took us 6 hours but that was ok, we were keen to see if our plants were still alive and our house in one piece!
They were and it was - phew. There was also loads of post waiting to be sorted through, most of which was Capital One credit card invitations. Once we were in we started with the packing, breaking only to have some Chinese food and watch ‘Casualty’, finishing around midnight.
The next day we loaded the van up with rubbish – including our sofa – and drove to the tip. They wouldn’t allow us to stop ‘cos we were in a van (they’re not allowed ‘cos builders rip off little ladies by charging them for skips then driving in their vans and dumping the stuff for free) – we had to go to the other tip, across town. We drove all the way over there, dumped the stuff, stopped off at Ikea to get some more boxes, B&Q to get some rope then back to carry on packing.
We had so much stuff we were still packing gone 1am, by which time we were knackered. We went to bed for a few hours then were up again at 6:30 to finish loading the van. We left Cardiff at 8:30am on Monday. The journey back to Kendal took 7 ½ hours – the van was so loaded I couldn’t go much over 50 for fear of the thing tipping over!
Once in Kendal (or just outside in Milnthorpe) we unloaded the van and packed all the contents into 2 massive crates. 1 ½ hours later we were back on the road going home and by 6:30 we’d arrived. All in all, it had been a nightmare!
Today we’ve found out that the little old lady who’s selling us our new house - where she’s lived for nearly 50 years - doesn’t own most of her garden. In fact, she barely owns half of it! So we’re trying to see if she can acquire it before she sells it all to us. But that’s unlikely. Bad news really :-(
