My desk is home to two plants: a dieffenbachia and fern (as well as various Japanese trinkets and notepads).
My dieffenbachia is in fine health, with new shoots appearing almost daily. I am very proud of it and believe its success is due to my green-fingered love.
My fern is looking rather ill, with bits shrivelling up or wilting. I think it's not suited for life indoors/was badly potted at the shop/is being poisoned by the temp.
I've been looking at these two plants today and have concluded that, with one flourishing while the other flounders, it's like observing life: the struggle to survive; the harsh effects of the environment; the pain of hunger and thirst....
Someone's just admired my dieffenbachia. "Is it plastic?" they said.
"No, it's very real," I replied, a tear in my eye. "And this one," I said, pointing to the fern "is dying, that's why it looks so shit."
