Matrix Revolutions
As the finale of my recent cinema visiting campaign (there's nothing else on at the moment that I fancy seeing), I watched the 3rd Matrix movie. I was wary before I got in there because I'd loved the first film and quite liked the second one: was this pattern to continue and leave me just liking the 3rd a little bit?
Well, as it turned out, yes.
It's basically the conclusion to a long story that at first seemed fascinating and insightful but finally revealed itself to be unnecessary and inappropriate. Subtle and obscure references to eastern philosophies and trendy religions, complex representations of 'alternative' layers of reality, simplistic visualisations of what 'the truth' looks like...whoa, that's deep, man. I'm sure the brothers are very clever and that we're all impressed, but it's really just a movie about some robots and computers with rogue programmes fighting with people in rubbish jumpers and one man in a cool leather coat.
The Matrix fans out there appear to be trying to truly understand this story so they can discover the secrets of life, truth and reality - as if the Wachowski brothers know and are revealing it to the world via these movies.
The Matrix trilogy does feel like a metaphor that needs to be understood but it's actually just a film about a rather horrid dark world that is ultimately incomprehensible. It smells just enough like a metaphor to get the mental taste buds going.
The film looks pretty and it is quite fun to try and figure out what actually happens but that's as far as I'm prepared to go with it. If I want to see 'the truth', I'll go for the real thing rather than the Hollywood version.
