It's back!
I've been silent for nearly two weeks as my Land Rover's been at the garage, getting its new gearbox. I can now break that silence as it's now back with me.
It's now got:
• a new gearbox
• a new clutch
• a new operation lever assembly
• a new transfer gear
• a new timing belt
• a second hand speedo (my one didn't work properly)
Total cost? About £1,100.
It goes really well and I've now driven it in the daylight, albeit for just 20 minutes on the way back from the garage at lunchtime. It was expensive to fix and not cheap to buy and will no doubt cost me more money in the future, but I like it. :-)
The Smithy Cottage saga continues (although not for much longer I think).
Since I last posted, the quarry (who actually own most of the garden) came back to the vendor's solicitor with a compromise: split the land in half. We thought this was a rubbish compromise considering we want all of the garden, so we told our solicitor to tell the vendor's solicitor to tell the quarry's solicitor that 'we want all of the garden'.
The quarry have now decided they want £50,000 for the land! Obviously the vendor (a little old lady, remember) can't pay that, and wouldn't even if she could. We don't want the house without the full garden, and certainly don't want it surrounded by quarry land that could be left to turn into a wasteland or used for who knows what.
So it looks like it's all over. But I've said that before and things started up again. But this time it really does look like it's over.
So all the time and money we've put into buying Smithy Cottage was a waste.
Grrrrrrrr.
